Portland sits in San Patricio County on the north shore of Corpus Christi Bay, reached across the harbor bridge, and this is Portland in Texas rather than its better-known namesake in Oregon. Growth here has been residential first, with commercial space following the households.
That history shows in the buildings. Much of the stock is recent: single-story professional suites, medical and dental offices built for purpose, newer retail centers with suites under one roof, and the kind of multi-tenant buildings a commuter town fills rather than a port economy does.
Schools form the other anchor. The Gregory-Portland campuses, plus the childcare and after-school businesses clustered around them, bring classroom, cafeteria, and gym space into the mix, all running on a term calendar that no office in this town shares.
